Our Story
Get to Know Us
In the heart of Detroit, a beacon of faith and hope rises — the French United Methodist Church (UMC). Established in 2016 by the visionary Revs. Gertrude Mukalay Mwadi and John Kabala Ilunga Ngoie, this church has become a sanctuary for French-speaking African immigrants, a place where they can connect with their religious heritage in their native tongue amidst the strangeness of a new land.

The story of the French UMC is one of resilience and divine calling. Gertrude and John, a clergy couple from the Democratic Republic of Congo, heard a clear call to serve. With degrees from Mulungushi Seminary and Africa University, and pastoral experience in their home country and Zimbabwe, they arrived in the United States, hearts full of dreams and spirits undeterred by the challenges ahead.

They began with empty pews, but their unwavering faith and dedicated evangelism slowly ignited the spark of a vibrant community. The church's growth mirrored the burgeoning African-born population of Michigan, creating a cultural tapestry woven with the threads of Amharic, Yoruba, Tigrinya, and West African French. From professionals to the newly arrived, the church welcomed all, offering not just spiritual nourishment but a reconnection with lost roots.

Despite the shadow cast by the COVID-19 pandemic, the French UMC's light did not dim. The congregation, which had grown to fifty steadfast members, continued to thrive, adapting and persisting through the storm. Their story is not just one of creating a church but of planting a home for the spirit, where every prayer and hymn in French soars as a testament to their enduring faith and the unyielding support of the community around them.

This is the inspirational saga of the French UMC — a tale of starting from zero and rising to the heavens, a narrative that continues to unfold with each new face that finds solace in its embrace. It's a story that invites others to join in, to be a part of something greater, to build a future where faith knows no language barriers, and the love of God speaks in every tongue.
